Application:

We first ask that you fill out our Adoption Application and send it to savemescout@yahoo.com

Once your application is received, it will be reviewed and you will be contacted via email by our Executive Director. Our job is to find each dog the right home. If your application is not approved for a particular dog, it is not necessarily a reflection on you or your home, but rather a determination that the home is not the right match, based on our knowledge of the dog and the breed.

Sometimes we receive multiple applications for a particular dog. If more than one application seems to be a good fit, we will conduct multiple home visits with the same animal and select the home that best meets the animal’s needs.

Home Visit:

Once your application is approved, it is time to schedule the home visit. We will find a time when all members of the home are present and have a volunteer bring the dog to your home. The home visit not only allows us to see where the dog will be spending most of its time, where they will sleep, where they will eat, the layout of your yard (if applicable) and of your neighborhood, but also how you and your family interact with the dog that we bring over. It is also a great opportunity for us to just chat with you in person and answer any additional questions that you may have.

Adoption:

An adoption decision will be made based on the needs of the individual animal, your interest in the dog and the success of the home visit.

Once an adoption is approved and you decide to adopt that particular dog, we will then ask you to wait until the next day before you bring your new friend home. This is to give you a chance to fully consider if adding the dog at this time is the right decision for you and your family.

We will then schedule a time to finalize the adoption. A volunteer will bring the dog to meet you at a neutral location, such as a pet retail store. You will be asked to complete the adoption contract and pay the adoption fee in full and in cash. The amount of your adoption fee will be printed on your Adoption Contract and will act as your receipt for the amount paid. The adoption fee is only refundable if the animal is returned to us for health reasons within the first 14 days.

At this time we will also schedule your private training session which is included in the adoption of all our dogs/puppies and is required of all adopters. The session instructs only in positive reinforcement training and no-touch training methods.

All our dogs are spayed/neutered, micro-chipped and up-to-date on appropriate vaccinations. You will receive a copy of the adoption contract, all available medical records and the microchip tag for the dog’s collar. If at any time after adoption, you decide you cannot keep the dog for any reason, the animal must be returned to Save Me Scout Rescue.

We at Save Me Scout Rescue are committed to our dogs for life. We happily provide support and guidance for you and your new family member at any time after adoption.

The following is a GREAT article on what to expect the first month home with your new companion, problems that may arise and how to overcome them and make the best relationship possible!

Adoption Process

Out of State Adoptions:

Since our rescue is located in Colorado, anyone who wishes to adopt from out of state must be willing to come to Colorado to meet the approved dog at the foster home. This includes all members of the household and any resident dogs. Please understand that there is no adoption guarantee if you make the trip to Colorado; the adoption will not be approved if the dog does not appear comfortable with the applicant(s) or if the applicant’s dog and ours do not get along.

Dogs will not be shipped or adopted out sight unseen ever. Dogs will not be adopted out of the country or to Hawaii.

If there are cats in the home, we do not require that they come out to Colorado, but only dogs that we know have been cat tested in multiple foster homes/situations will be considered as possible candidates.

The applicant will be responsible for all travel costs for themselves and for the dog if they are approved for the adoption. The applicant will also be responsible for costs incurred during their visit and will need to find appropriate lodging during their visit as they will not be permitted to stay at the foster home residence prior to or after the home visit.
